Individual Application

STEP 3

Meet with your local trainer or supervisor to complete the verification of competency checklist, including confirming that you have the required number of endorsement hours.

Employer Declaration Application

STEP 4

Complete the SkilledTradesBC application as noted above in STEP 1.

Note: Be sure to pay the $120 fee online at SkilledTradesBC and then add that transaction # to the application before you submit it. Keep a copy against project 100HEO via the TNDC expense form and process of that receipt to submit for reimbursement. It is OK if you don’t have a SkilledTradesBC ID – that will be assigned to you through the application process.

STEP 5

Submit the SkilledTradesBC completed application and the TNDC Validation of Competency form to the SkilledTradesBC Email. Copy site HSE.

STEP 6

Watch for a letter from SkilledTradesBC confirming approval of your application and providing information on how and where to schedule your written exam.

You have up to 24 months from the date of approval to write and pass the exam. You can take the exam twice for this first fee, and then it costs an additional $100 for each exam after that. The Tahltan HEO program only covers the initial $120 exam fee.

The letter will provide you with options for where to write your exam within BC, and how to make an appointment.

Once you get your approval letter, please contact site HSE and the HEO Program Manager so we can get your study supports organized.

STEP 7

STUDY for the written exam.

Most of us have not taken tests in years and the idea feels overwhelming. We have support resources:

  1. We are purchasing HEO Student Participant guides and there will be 2 with Red Chris HSE team, and 1 at each Contact North BC office. These can be read through at these locations.

  2. We have enrolled you in the HEO Prep course at Thompson Rivers University (TRU), and will provide you with this course information via email. It is a web based resource that walks you through every section of the SkilledTradesBC HEO course and has mini tests throughout, as well as a full practice Certification of Qualification exam. There are learning resources that will help you identify what information you know and what information you need to learn more about, and then the content to support that learning.

  3. For those in Dease Lake, Iskut or Telegraph – stop by the Contact North BC office and they can sit with you to work through the TRU website and practice exams.

  4. For those that are not comfortable writing the exam and would prefer to participate in the oral exam, we can arrange that for you. Please speak with Contact North BC.

The general weighting of the questions is broken down HERE.

STEP 8

Register to write your exam once you feel ready (be sure to do this by month 12 to give yourself time for any delays in scheduling or re-writing). Complete this FORM to request an exam date and location.

STEP 9

Take the exam. Use the full 3 hours, do not rush. Provide TNDC HSE with a copy of your completed certification. Remember to bring current government ID and arrive early.

If you need assistance completing any of the forms on this page, please speak with the teams at Contact North BC or SkilledTradesBC Customer Service.
